HISTORY AND ORIGIN OF VALENTINE'S DAY GIFTS. WHAT CAN YOU GIFT YOUR LOVED ONE’S THIS VALENTINE'S DAY?
Some of us are ecstatic about the idea of spending the entire day celebrating love. Others believe that the popular understanding of love has become commercialized & muddled.
Valentine's Day is one of the most widely observed traditions in Western culture, so it doesn't matter how you feel about it. The purpose of Valentine's Day has been to celebrate romantic love and passion throughout its long history. Nowadays, it's also a time to celebrate platonic love, with everyone exchanging valentines, from young children to the elderly.
Contrary to popular belief, greeting card companies did not create this holiday; it did not appear out of thin air. You might not be aware, but Valentine's Day has a long history.
WHAT IS VALENTINE’S DAY?
Valentine's Day, also known as St. Valentine's Day, is a February 14 holiday during which lovers express their love with greetings and gifts.
Given their similarities, it has been suggested that the holiday derives from the mid-February Roman festival of Lupercalia. The festival, which celebrated the arrival of spring, included fertility rites and the random pairing of women and men. Pope Gelasius forbade the celebration of Lupercalia at the end of the fifth century and is sometimes credited with replacing it with St. Valentine's Day, but the true origin of the holiday is hazy at best. Valentine's Day did not become a romantic holiday until the 14th century.
HISTORY AND ORIGIN OF VALENTINES DAY.
Another Background story on the history and origin of Valentine's Day.
The day is also said to be named after a priest who was executed by Claudius II Gothicus around 270 CE, even though there were several Christian martyrs by the name of Valentine. Legend has it that the priest wrote a letter to the daughter of his jailer, whom he had befriended and, by some accounts, healed of blindness, signing it "from your Valentine."
Others claim that the holiday was named after the bishop St. Valentine of Terni, though it's possible that the two saints were one person. An additional popular myth claims that St. Valentine disobeyed the emperor's orders and secretly wed couples in order to protect the husbands from going to war. Because of this, his feast day is linked to romantic relationships.
Valentines, or formal messages, first appeared in the 1500s. By the late 1700s, commercially printed cards had become commonplace. Midway through the 1800s, the first commercially produced Valentines were printed in the United States. It frequently features hearts, the traditional repository of emotion, as well as Cupid, the Roman god of love. Birds also became a symbol of the day because it was believed that the avian mating season starts in the middle of February. Candy and flowers, especially red roses, a representation of beauty and love, are common gifts.
